Parallelism(সমান্তরাল/সমান)

একটি বাক্যে কিছু conjunction (and, but, or, as well as, than, is, so --- as, as…..as, either --- or, neither- --- nor, not only but also etc.) দ্বারা যুক্ত হলে, conjunction গুলোর আগে ও পরে সমজাতীয় noun / pronoun / adjective/verb/adverb / infinitive, বসে এটি মুলত parallelism.

Type: 01 (and/as well as দিয়ে parallel)

Fahim is a scholar, an athlete and an artist.

Type: 02 (than/so---as দিয়ে parallel)

In an admission test, to answer correctly is more important than to finish quickly.

Type: 03 (Be verb/so-as/as--as দিয়ে parallel)

Riding bicycle is similar to riding car.

Type: 04 (more than দিয়ে parallel)

Shela likes me more than him.

Type: 05 (either--or/neither--nor/not only--but also দিয়ে parallel)

Either you or he did the task.

Type: 06 (or/but দিয়ে parallel)

I usually go fishing or do something on Friday.

বাক্যে একাধিক সমজাতীয় তথ্য বা ধারণা প্রকাশের সময় তাদের ব্যাকরণগত রূপ একই রাখার প্রক্রিয়াকে Parallelism বা সমান্তরাল গঠন বলা হয়। যদি কোনো তালিকায় একটি শব্দ Noun হয়, তবে অন্যগুলোকেও Noun হতে হবে; একইভাবে একটি Gerund হলে অন্যগুলোকেও Gerund হতে হবে। এর ব্যত্যয় ঘটলে বাক্যটি শ্রুতিকটু এবং ব্যাকরণগতভাবে ভুল হয়।

যেমন: "He likes swimming, hiking, and to run" বাক্যটি ভুল, কারণ এখানে প্রথম দুটি Gerund কিন্তু শেষটি Infinitive।

সঠিক বাক্যটি হবে— "He likes swimming, hiking, and running."

Correlative Conjunctions (যেমন: Not only... but also, Either... or, Neither... nor, Both... and) ব্যবহারের ক্ষেত্রে Parallelism রক্ষা করা অত্যন্ত জরুরি। এই কনজাংশনগুলোর প্রথম অংশের পর যে Part of speech বসবে, দ্বিতীয় অংশের পরও ঠিক সেটিই বসাতে হবে।

ভুল বাক্য: "He is not only talented but also has hard work." এখানে 'talented' একটি Adjective কিন্তু 'has hard work' একটি Clause। এর সঠিক রূপ হবে— "He is not only talented but also hardworking." এখানে উভয় অংশেই Adjective ব্যবহার করে সামঞ্জস্য রক্ষা করা হয়েছে।

তুলনা করার সময়ও (Comparisons) সমজাতীয় বস্তুর মধ্যে তুলনা হতে হবে, যা প্যারালেলিজমের একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ।

যেমন: "The weather of Rajshahi is better than Dhaka" বাক্যটি ভুল, কারণ এখানে রাজশাহীর আবহাওয়ার সাথে সরাসরি ঢাকা শহরের তুলনা করা হয়েছে, যা অযৌক্তিক। সঠিক বাক্যটি হবে— "The weather of Rajshahi is better than that of Dhaka" অথবা "The weather of Rajshahi is better than Dhaka's weather." এখানে আবহাওয়ার সাথে আবহাওয়ারই তুলনা নিশ্চিত করা হয়েছে।

এছাড়াও Infinitive এবং Gerund এর মিশ্রণ এড়িয়ে চলা প্যারালেলিজমের অন্যতম প্রধান নিয়ম।

যেমন: "To exercise is as important as eating healthy" না লিখে লিখতে হবে— "To exercise is as important as to eat healthy" অথবা "Exercising is as important as eating healthy."

একইভাবে কোনো তালিকায় Verb-এর টেন্সের ধারাবাহিকতা বজায় রাখা প্রয়োজন। যেমন: "She opened the door, entered the room, and sits down" ভুল; সঠিক হবে— "She opened the door, entered the room, and sat down."
